Determining Your Ice Requirements

The amount of ice you will need for a particular application varies depending on the product to be cooled, the number of times the product is iced, and the purpose of the ice (such as initial product cooling, holding chilled product, or icing chilled product for transport). Volumes are calculated on ice needs for each 24-hour period. North Star’s experienced staff would be happy to help you determine the correct amount of ice required for your operation. Here are some general guidelines for the amount of ice required for commonly iced products:

  • Fish:  1 pound ice to 1 pound fish
  • Shrimp:  1 to 3 pounds ice to 1 pound shrimp
  • Mussels and Clams: 0.5 pounds ice to 1 pound mussels or clams
  • Poultry:  1 pound of ice to 1 pound of poultry
  • Produce:  1 pound ice to 1 pound vegetables
  • Concrete cooling:  7.5 pounds of ice to 1 cubic yard of concrete.
  • Dye and chemical manufacturing:  Varies on quench rate of dyes in reactor vessels. Please contact North Star for more information.
