North Star ice is used in a number of ways to cool produce. During harvest, ice is used to remove field heat from certain vegetables. To maintain product temperature and quality, ice is also used to ice cases prior to shipping, and to top ice shipping containers after being loaded into trucks or rail cars. North Star ice makers have also been used to freeze orange juice at the peak of the season. The juice is applied directly to the ice maker evaporator to create frozen flakes that are then stored and processed throughout the year.
Depending on the application, produce processors can choose a North Star stainless steel or carbon steel flake ice maker. North Star also offers a wide selection of ice storage systems which can be integrated with delivery systems to a single or multiple use points, or to a case ice dispenser.
Flake ice has more than 17,000 square feet (1,570 square meters) of surface area per ton of ice providing greater cooling efficiency than any other type of ice.
The thin shape of flake ice (1.5mm) allows it to melt quickly for the fastest heat transfer. Ice only cools when it melts, so faster melting equals faster cooling.
Flake ice remains dry, packs well, and cushions produce against damage. Its flat shape will not create indentations in perishable products.
North Star flake ice is completely dry and free-flowing, so it will not fuse together in a storage bin or clog delivery systems. This is critical in high volume ice applications like seafood processing plants.
Flake ice is the most economical ice to produce, requiring only 1.3 tons of refrigeration per ton of ice from 60ºF (16º C) water.

Designed and built for dependability and efficient operation, North Star ice makers produce more ice than any other ice maker using an equally rated compressor, and convert all water to ice with no water
